The Jewish Day School

Global education starts early at JDS. Beginning in Kindergarten, JDS students learn and practice a second language daily.  By the time they are Middle School students, they are comfortable speaking Hebrew ad prepared to use the language as they travel to Israel for their 8th Grade class trip. Digital technologies and multimedia allow JDS students to connect with individuals and events around the world—a Rabbi in Israel teaches a JDS class; students speak with their peers in other countries via Skype; JDS students compete with other children around the globe in World Math Day (an online, real-time international math competition) and the school participates in events like the Global Day of Jewish Learning.

Our students study various world religions, history and politics.  Speakers come to campus to talk about their different faiths - Muslim, Buddist, Christian, Hindu and more. Students initiate community service work to respond to the needs of people around the world including communities in Israel, earthquake-ravaged Haiti and post-Katrina New Orleans. They respect and value differences in cultures and opinions—something they learn in their own classrooms where they, themselves, represent diversity.

Our families come from various denominations of Judaism; from different parts of the world including South America, Asia, Israel, Russia and Canada; and they speak numerous languages including Hebrew, German, Spanish and French. Putting a global lens on early learning and challenging students to appreciate differences in culture and opinion creates individuals who are better prepared to understand and address global issues in the future.
