Focus & Fight PovertyWhen: Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Details: The need for our Jewish community to come together to address poverty has never been greater. Focus and Fight Poverty is a week of action to annually renew the commitment by the Jewish Community of Greater Seattle to fight poverty through Education, Action, and Advocacy. In its third year, Focus and Fight will be held again during the holiday of Sukkot, September 22-29, 2010. Jewish organizations and individuals are working collectively to alleviate poverty and recommit to Tikkun Olam (repair the world) through a series of coordinated events and activities.
This year, The Jewish Federation presents Focus and Fight Poverty Day at the Market on Sunday, September 26, 2010, 11am-2pm. Six Sukkot (booths) will be erected at grocery stores and farmers markets in the Puget Sound area. Community volunteers will ask market-goers to purchase and donate fresh produce, non-perishable items, and monetary contributions for Seattle's local area food banks. Volunteers will also connect both Jews and non-Jews alike to a host of anti-poverty programs and initiatives throughout the community.
In conjunction with the Real Change Homeless Speakers’ Bureau, the Jewish Federation is helping put a human face on poverty. Highly trained speakers will share their personal stories with synagogue groups and classrooms. They speak of their own homelessness, food insecurity, and lack of healthcare. They offer a personal insight into the pros and cons of our current systems and give advice on how the general public can help.
The Community Advocacy Roundtable will take place on Monday, September 27. This event will give participants a clear vision of anti-poverty issues and then teach participants effective next steps and ways to advocate on behalf of poverty-related issues.
Pre-printed post cards supporting policies related to poverty in Washington State will be distributed and available for community signatures at all Focus and Fight functions and events during the week, including Day at the Market and the Advocacy Roundtable. The signed cards will then be sent to state legislators to inspire action.
